THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T. / Stanley Kramer Productions - 1953

It's Dr. Seuss Monday with Tabonga, here at The Dungeon!.. Here's a movie that I saw a number of times in the fifties, but, since everything was broadcast in black and white back then, the only way you could see it in all it's glory was at the theater! Stanley Kramer produced 34 movies that includes HIGH NOON, THE WILD ONE, THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION, THE DEFIANT ONES, ON THE BEACH, INHERIT THE WIND and BLESS THE BEASTS & CHILDREN. This film had a budget of $1,600,000 and it shows!

Eegah!! sent over a wild little soundclip from this flick, sooooo, you can push the big red 'GO' button there next to the Happy Fingers Beanie, NOW, Ralphie The Tarantula! Here's our audio offering for... THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T!

The extremely talented Tommy Rettig plays young Bart Collins, the bane of his existence is the piano lessons he's forced to take under the tutelage of the very demanding, Dr. Terwilliker. Tommy actually plays the piano here, he started his career at age 8, appearing on KRAFT THEATRE in 1949. What us kids all remember is his role as Jeff Miller in 116 episodes of LASSIE. Tommy's adult height was only 5' 4" so his career didn't pan out, and, he was a long time advocate for the legalization of marijuana. He died of natural causes at age 54 in 1996.

Has Conried plays Dr. Dr. Terwilliker, aka, Dr. T. In Bart's dreamworld, Dr. T. is a demanding tyrant with bully guards to protect him and his house is surrounded by an electrified fence! Hans was a scientist in THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD and the awesome host/narrator on FRACTURED FLICKERS. He ended up with 208 acting credits and left us in 1982 at age 64.

Bart's mom is the doc's fiancée, she's hypnotized with power and barely recognizes her own son! Bart has to wear a Happy Fingers Beanie or be punished.

What a bunch of great images! In the world of Dr. Seuss, there are no straight lines or 90 degree angles.

Peter Lind Hayes plays the doc's handyman, August Zabladowski. Bart looks to him as a father figure. Peter was also in THE OUTER LIMITS episode, "Behold Eck!"

These are reasons you can be detained in The Dungeon, so, better watch it, buster!!

Here's the scene our soundclip comes from, a mad routine featuring the doc's musical puppets! George Chakiris is one of the dancers.

On this dilapidated elevator ride taking Bart and August to The Dungeon, the operator has one wild 'n' weird look going for him!

The doc's busses bring in 499 more kids to play at the big recital where he will conduct all the little buggers on a giant, 2-layered piano!

But, Bart has a little surprise and ruins the doc's plans, causing pandemonium a plenty! In the end, Bart's mom and August hook up, making for a happy ending!

THE LOVED ONE - "The Moition Picture With Something To Offend Everyone!" (1965)

Tonight we've got a very special movie for you from 1965 called "The Loved One!" I honestly don't have anything to compare "The Loved One" to, it's that unique!

"The Loved One" is ridiculous! "The Loved One" is hilarious! "The Loved One" is whatever you want it to be!!

I could write a whole blog just dedicated to the ins and outs of "The Loved One!" The star is a chap named Robert Morse! Robert might deserve some kind award for being in movies with the longest titles: "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Momma's Hung You In The Closet and I'm Feeling So Sad," "How To Succeed In Business Without Even Trying," "Where Were You When The Lights Went Out," and "The Man Who Shook The Hand Of Vicente Fernadez," might be some pretty good examples! Robert is still working today and has a regular gig on the TV series "Mad Men!"

"The Loved One" is a 1960's Pop Culture addict's dream come true! There's an amazing array of talent, and many of them like James Coburn are probably on screen for two minutes or less!

Sir John Gielgud was more prone to characters like "Becket," Hamlet," and "Richard The III!" In fact, Sir John was such a classical actor, he was in two versions of movies called "Julius Caesar," one in 1970 where he played Julius himself, and one in 1953 where he had the role of Cassius! In his role here, he works for a movie studio, and it's his job to teach cowboy actor Robert Easton how to speak with an English accent! In real life Robert Easton was a  Hollywood voice coach himself! That's how twisted this film is!

Tab Hunter has a small role as The Whispering Glades cemetery tour guide! Tab always seem to look good, no matter what he's doing!

There's a whole lot of eye candy and attention to details in "The Loved One!" The basic premise is that it's a skewering of the funeral business, but it's a lot deeper than that! I love this shot! In white is Anjanette Comer as Aimee Thanatogenous! Aimee works at the cemetery and is one cold fish, but everyone has a tendency to fall in love with her!

Who else but Liberace would you want as funeral director? George?

It's 1965! Tab Hunter and Liberace had not yet come out of the closet and play odd, but basically straight characters, and the normally macho Rod Steiger has the role of the very effeminate Mr. Joyboy, but he's not gay and is in love with his co-worker Aimee!

Everything's backasswards in this film, so funny man, comedian extraordinare Milton Berle has a role that isn't funny!

The only person Aimee can confide in is the Guru Brahmin! she writes him constantly seeking advice on her love life, or on where her love life should be, if she had one!

On the receiving end of those letters is the great Lionel Stander as con man Guru supreme drunken louse Brahmin! Not exactly the kind of guy you want giving you advice!  In the 30's, Lionel was in shorts with Shemp Howard, Fatty Arbuckle, and Bob Hope, and he was the voice of bad bird Buzz Buzzard in Woody Woodpecker cartoons! In 1972 he was in a Spanish-Italian movie called "Tedeum" (Father Jackleg), where he played a character named Stinky Manure! He was also Max in 111 episodes of a TV show called "Hart To Hart" in the early 80's!

The real star of "The Loved One" is one of my favourite 60's comedians, Jonathan Winters! He does double duty in this film as brothers Henry Glenworthy and the honourable Reverend Wilbur Glenworthy! Jonathan was a seriously funny man! His comedy records will always remain as some of the best!

Mr. Joyboy invites Aimee over to his house for dinner! He lives with his Mother and waits on her hand and foot!

Not offended yet? Ayllene (House Of The Damned, Chamber Of Horrors) Gibbons as Mr. Joyboy's very large Mom, nearly has an orgasm watching fried chicken commercials on the boob tube!

After all of that, what really creeped me out was the place where Aimee was residing! She lives in a partially constructed home that has been abandoned because it's built on an ever shifting cliff! Straight out weirdsville! Robert finds it pretty unsettling too!

A 15 year old Paul (Phantom Of The Paradise) Williams has the role of  the rocket surgeon egghead kid!
There are a lot of sexual innuendos in "The Loved One," and a lot of outmestartuno moments too!

Reverend Glenworthy needs to reclaim the land that he owns that is presently a cemetery so he can build an old folks home, so he has devised a plan to shoot all the bodies into space, but to do that, he needs the approval of the Air Force, so he throws a little COFFIN PARTY for the fly boys! The spunky music was written by award winning classical composer John (The Hour Of 13) Addison!

Let's see, what am I going to try and do? Explain the rest of this thing or show you a cool shot of the Zomba Café? Let's go with Zomba!!

The first body they want to exhume and shoot off into space is the husband of the grieving Miss Dill Pickle herself, Barbara Nichols on the right, so they have to go to the Zomba Café to try and convince her! Barbara was in the classic "Twilight Zone " episode "Twenty-Two" and was also in "The Human Duplicators!" On the left is the manager of the joint as played by Reta Shaw! Name a 60's TV show, and Reta was in it, "Dobie Gillis," Andy Griffith," "My Three Sons," "Lost In Space," "I Spy," "The Monkees" etc. etc.

I couldn't pack all the talent in this movie into this few fotos! There are also appearances by Dana Andrews, Roddy (Planet Of The Apes) McDowell, Robert Morley, Bernie (The Love Boat) Kopell, Asa (Manbeast) Maynor, Jamie Farr, and Joy Harmon! Simply amazing!

As well it should be, Jonathan Winters has the last laugh!

THE OUTER LIMITS / The Galaxy Being - 1963

It's Alien Invasion Friday with Tabonga, here at The Dungeon!.. We gots the very first episode from this great series, and, one our whole family watched on Sept. 16, 1963. To kick off the series they got the ever popular Cliff (CHARLY) Robertson to star along with their new sci-fi creation, The Galaxy Being!..

Eegah!! sent over a soundclip with the Master Control Voice and more for your earjoyment, sooooo, you can push the big red 'GO' button there next to the atomic radio tower, NOW, Rufus The Gnat! Here's an earfull of... The Galaxy Being!

Cliff plays Alan Maxwell, owner and radio station operator who contacts a Being in another galaxy while experimenting with his equipment.

Alan has to go to a party and tells this fill-in DJ, whatever he does, do not increase the station's power output!.. Got it?!

The party's for Alan but all he can think about is getting back to the station and communicate with his new buddy from another world.

The dumbass DJ wants to impress his girlfriend by being heard as far away as Canada, so, he turns the power level up all the way... Oops, bad move!!

The power surge causes the Being to become 3-dimentional and it crashes out of the monitor and into the station!

Alan's brother wants him to listen to the weird signal on the radio, causing Alan to rush back to station without telling his wife he was leaving.

And, when Alan's wife hears about his rude disappearance from the party, well, she's had just about enough of his obsession with the scientific method!

Meanwhile, the Being has escaped and is out wandering around the city. This poor security guard has a close encounter of the fourth kind with the thing!

Here's the Being rummaging through a pawn shop he stumbles into.

The military arrives! Very cool shot, I had a model of that vehicle in the fifties.

Alan's wife is accidently shot in the neck by one trooper, but, the Galaxy Being heals her completely before...

He's disolved for disobeying his planet's 'no experimenting' policy!! The soundclip tells you to tune in next week at the same time, when we'll bring you another classic episode of THE OUTER LIMITS starring our pal, Robert Culp, so, you better!.. Be there or be SQUARE!!

DR. WHO - Season 2, Episode 30 - "The Executioners" (1965)

"Dr. Who" is one of the most popular, successful, and long running TV shows of all time! It's my job to remind you that it's out there just in case you forgot, and feel like doing some kind of six month, 24 hour a day marathon any time soon!

This particular episode was part of a series called "The Chase," and was titled "The Executioners!" It aired on May 22, 1965!

Don't you just love it?

"Dr. Who" first aired on November 23, 1963 and then ran 26 seasons straight all the way to 1989! There have been movie spinoffs, and of course the present day version is way popular too!

Just to show you the meager beginnings of what has become a real phenomenon! Doot doo doo doo! TARDIS!!

The first Dr. Who was William Hartnell! William had been acting since 1932, and finished his career with 132 episodes as Dr. Who! What a way to go out! The current version of "Dr. Who" just got finished with it's 11th version of the Doctor as played by Matt Smith, and Series (Season) 8 will be airing the end of this year with Peter Capaldi in the role of the good Doctor!

Jacqueline Hill was Barbara Wright and/or Lexa from 1963 to 1980! I love her extravagant outfit! I just got a new computer a couple of days ago, I know just how she feels!

The mighty men commanding the controls of those evil Daleks were Robert Jewell, Kevin Manser, John Scott Martin, and Gerald Taylor!

The music in "Dr. Who" was created by Dudley (The Tomorrow People) Simpson, and Peter Hawkins and David Graham were the guys who came up with the voice effects for The Daleks! They should win some kind of award for creating the most obnoxious voices ever, and it hardly seems possible, but voice # 2 is even more annoying that # 1! Equalization and Ring Modulation combined with a 30 HZ Sine Wave, that'll do it every time! Dr. WHO is everywhere, go get some!
