TOUCH OF EVIL - Henry Mancini - "¿Dónde Está Mi Esposa" (1958)

"Touch Of Evil" is one of my favourite movies, and goes way beyond being merely special with an all-star cast, this film is Magnífico y Súper Fantástico!!! The Maestro Henry Mancini wrote the score, and although Henry is well known as the composer of "The Pink Panther Theme," and "Moon River," my favourite of his works will always be the timeless "Peter Gunn" theme!! Working effortlessly in all genres, including the Whitey Thomas era of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Here's just a small snippet of how Hank could rock!

You would't really think a couple of D cell batteries and a cheap $2.99 kitchen timer would be capable of causing much trouble, but....

...this vintage Chrysler and it's passengers are about to become toast! This movie starts off with about a four minute single shot that follows the car right to the point where it explodes, while at the same time introducing the stars Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh as Mike and Susan Vargas! The gal in the car is just one of the four and a half classic beauties of celluloid in this movie, Joi Lansing as Zita! Reading the credits, I knew Joi was in this film, but it took me forever to find out where, since she's gone before it really gets rolling hard!

This is one film that I'm not going to say much about the people involved, because unlike the Director Orson Welles, I'm only mortal! Orson also gets credit for his starring role, and for writing the screenplay, but it was based on a novel titled "Badge Of Evil" by Whit Masterson! Living large, Orson's character Police Captain Hank Quinlan, is made to look even bigger than life, by constantly having the camera shot up at him from a lower position!

Here's a good topic for discussion! So what do you think, does the Oscar winning Charlton Heston make a convincing Mexican? His Spanish is fairly decent! It's very odd, but it seems to work!

The Grande Familia, Akim Tamiroff as Uncle Joe Grandi, and Valentin de Vargas as pinche Pancho! Valentin was the 'go to' guy for many a Mexican and/or American Indian role for many years. Akim was actually of Armenian descent! Every Mexican guy I know named Pancho's real name is Francisco, but actually it's Javier!

For Janet Leigh,"Touch Of Evil" was two years before "Psycho" and 9 years after her appearance in the first Jerry Lewis directed short film ironically titled "How To Smuggle A Hernia Across The Border!"

I told you there were four beauties, here Zsa Zsa Gabor makes a very brief appearance as the strip club owner as Hank Quinlan gobbles down another candy bar!!

This is one of the few times you'll see Hank Quinlan smile in this movie, and here's the reason why....

.....Hank has just cast his eyes on his old flame, the amazing Marlene Dietrich as the bar owner Tanya! I would say at this very point in time, or maybe any time, Marlene was the hottest 57 year old woman on the planet!!!

For various reasons, the Grandi family is trying to make the Vargas's life miserable by doing crap like aiming a flashlight at Susan Vargas through the Hotel window from some adjacent building just to be creepy!

Susan has had enough, and tells her husband she needs to go back over the border to America where she would feel safer!!

Right!!!! She ends up just across the border in the middle of nowhere at the lovely Mirador Motel, a place with no other customers that just also happens to be owned by the Grandi family!

Dennis Weaver has the role of the night man at The Mirador, and he's so weird, you think he's going to go all Anthony Perkins on Janet, but he's a little too crazy to go that far!

You think this blind woman's role has some significant purpose as she listens in on Mike's phone call, but it's just Orson being weird!

Janet Leigh was a real valley girl having been born in Merced, California! Her arm was broken before this film started production, and they had to take the cast off and do everything in their power to not make it look broken during the shoot!

"Hey Captain, Look what I found!" Joseph Calleia is Police Sergeant Pete Menzies, Captain Quinlan's lackey and partner, planting evidence and doing whatever it takes to make the Captain the most respected cop in the land despite his obvious personality defects! Joe was in at least two classic big monkey movies, The Gorilla," and "The Monster And The Girl!"

Grandi and Quinlan strike up a deal with The Devil, and after Uncle Joe proposes a toast, Hank tells him he doesn't drink after having his 3rd or 4th double bourbon!

Irish Catholic Mercedes McCambridge has the role of the bad ass leader of the pack! Mercedes McCambridge also had a stunning career that included an Oscar winning performance in her film debut, "All The King's Men," but her most well known accomplishment was as the voice of the devil child in "The Exorcist!" Originally not credited as promised, she made an appeal, and they had to make a new print that included her name in the credits!

"Touch Of Evil" is a great good cop/bad cop and race relations in the 50's story, and I have no doubt that this scene has multiple interpretations as big loser Hank and the big stuffed head of a once proud bull that eventually lost the fight, are shot in juxtaposition to one another!

Hank asks Tanya to read the cards, and tell him what his future holds, but instead she says, "You have no future Hank!"

Now the camera shoots down because a totally defeated Hank Quinlan is no longer the big man he used to be! "Touch Of Evil" is dark, gritty, and grimy like a chocolate bar dropped in the dirt! Just pick it up, eat it and enjoy!

MY LIVING DOLL - "Boy Meets Girl" (1964)

Here's a pretty Wild Wednesday feature for you!
"My Living Doll!"

"My Living Doll" was a TV series that came out in 1964, and was only on for one season.
It was a show about a female robot and was filled with all kinds of innocent perversion! It's no wonder I liked it so much! This was the very first episode and it was titled "Boy Meets Girl."

The 'star' of the show was one my favorite leading men from the 60's, Robert 'Bob" Cummings!
For me, Bob Cummings was like a better looking, not as stupid, and funnier Jerry Lewis!
Bob's character is named Dr. Robert McDonald!

But the person who steals the show is the absolutely stunning Julie Newmar as the robot doll!

If my math is correct, Julie Newmar just turned 86 a couple of weeks ago. Julie is so pretty that it makes me believe there must be a God!

On the right is Henry Beckman as a Dr. Carl Miller. The Doctor is upset and freaking out because he has lost an object called AF709, a secret project he's been working on! Bob tells him if he finds it, he will let him know! Henry Beckman is one of those special people with a line of credits as long as your arm, and he was in two "Twilight Zone" episodes, "A Thing About Machines," and "Valley Of The Shadows!" If he's got a familiar face, it's because he was also in so many cool TV shows in the 50's, 60's, and 70's that included titles like "Peter Gunn," "My Favorite Martian," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," and "The Munsters."

Bob sees some bare feet enter the room, and looks up to see.....

.........This gorgeous woman who is not quite all dressed!

She kind of talks in riddles, and Dr. Bob is a little confused until she turns to leave!

That's when he realizes that she is AF709, the object that Dr. Miller was saying that he was missing!

On the right is Jack Mullaney as Dr. Peter Robinson who is going to fall in love with the robot on first sight. Of course, at this point, neither of them know she's a robot! Dr. Bob calls Dr. Miller to tell him that he found his 'project' and that she is exiting the building! Jack Mullaney passed away at the age of only 52 after having a stroke, but he still managed to be in a memorable series of flicks like Disney's "The Absent Minded Professor," "Dr. Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine," "Spinout" with Elvis, and "Little Big Man!"

Julie Newmar dressed like this is sexier than a million or more completely naked women could ever be!

Dr. Miller tries to explain things to an unbelieving Dr. McDonald, and then asks him to take the robot home with him for a couple of days, because he needs to leave town. (He ends up being gone for a couple of months!) Bob has no idea what to think!

Julie Newmar is still probably best remembered for her role as Catwoman!

Out in public, the robot is creating quite a stir, and Dr. Bob thinks he better get her to his apartment A.S.A.P!

After being shown the control buttons on her back, Bob is finally convinced that she really is a robot, so he says something to her like, "Okay, first thing is, we need to get you out of those clothes," meaning get her into something more normal. She is a subservient robot, so she complies and starts to disrobe!

As much as he would like it, that wasn't really what nice guy Bob had in mind!

Bob doesn't even trust himself with her now, and calls his sister to come over and act as a chaperone!

"My Living Doll" was only a half hour program, so without commercials, it only lasts 25 minutes, and gets over way too fast, but if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch all 26 episodes for no extra charge! Hell, that's worth the annual price of an account all by itself! I know a lot of people have beefs with Amazon for various reasons, but I'm sure not one of them just because of stuff like this!

Speaking of Amazon, you know it's usually all fun and games around here, but if the Brazilian government doesn't get off it's ass soon, and do something about the out of control fires burning in the Amazon rain forest, we're all going to end up living in some cheap ass Sci-Fi movie about the end of the world!
In the meantime, I'm going to watch as many episodes of "My Living Doll" as I can, and I suggest you do the same!

BLOOD OF DRACULA / AIP - 1957

Tonite's feature is about bad girls at a a girl's boarding school. Their science teacher tests her theory that there is a power within humans that is beyond that of the atom! Using hypnosis and a special amulet, a new troubled student becomes the subject of her experiments and results in a series of full-moon murders. Herman Cohen produced this and I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, both have similar storylines. This is a redo of a post from 2007.

It's always great when a fifties monster flick has a hit tune in it, and, this one, "Puppy Love," is probably the best! The song was written and performed by Jerry Blaine. He also wrote the great tune in Teenage Werewolf, "Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo!" Jerry died in 1973 at the age of 36!

Lettuce bring in our fuzzy little Dungeon helper and button pusher, Ralphie The Tarantula!.. Hello, Ralphie! The lil' dude is here to start the show, so to speak. So, push the big red 'GO' button there next to the chartreuse loveseat, now, Ralphie! Here's our awesome soundclip for... BLOOD OF DRACULA!

This has a typical fifties theme of troubled youth in conflict with the parents, especially the new mom. Jean Dean (she's hot) plays the new mom, she was also in RADAR PATROL vs THE SPY KING, HOT ROD and GOG! Sandra Harrison plays the daughter, Nancy. The dad is played by the familiar face of Thomas Browne Henry, who had 187 acting credits. We loved Henry in THE BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS!

It's all fun and games at Sherwood, School For Girls! I enjoy watching girlies running around in their jammies! WEREWOLF IN A GIRL'S DORMITORY is probably the best flick for that kind of thing, though.

Here's stud grounds keeper and everybody's boyfriend, Eddie, played by Don Devlin. Don played Moe in ANATOMY OF A PSYCHO.

The science teacher, Miss Branding, singles Nancy out to try her weird theories of evolution on. Teach is played by Louise Lewis, she can also be seen in I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, THE VAMPIRE and was in an episode of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER.

PAR-TEE TIME!!..

Jerry Blaine plays a guy named Tab, a very cool fifties name!

Stylish, too!

During the full moon, Miss Branding calls out Nancy's primal rage to manifest itself...

The cops come snooping around, asking lots of questions. That's Richard (WAR OF THE SATELLITES) Devon there as the detective there on the left.

Time for an nighttime outdoor treasure hunt during a full moon, the perfect place for somebloody to get killed!

...Know whut I mean?!

Nancy even takes out Tab!.. And, not on a date!

As Miss Branding works in her lab, Nancy comes close to attacking her boyfriend who's there to see her for the first time.

Miss Branding tries to control Nancy, but, now realizes that she's created a monster that can't be controlled...

And, Nancy chokes the crap out of the old bag!

Nancy falls back onto a metal shard, game over...

Pretty messy, teach and her medical journal end up in a big puddle of acid!
