CARTES SUR TABLE - Paul Misraki - "Attack Of The Robots" (1964)

"Attack Of The Robots" is an early outing by Jess Franco following on the heels of the Dr. Orloff flicks, that is basically a vehicle that shows off the talents of one Eddie Constantine.

Eddie is not exactly a household name in America, but in Europe, he was essentially, the poor man's Humphrey Bogart! Eddie had swagger, and he used it to good advantage playing tough guys for many years. One of his characters, private dick Lemmy Caution, was reprised many times over the years, starting in the 1953 feature "La môme vert de gris" or "Poison Ivy," all the way to the 1991 film "Allemagne 90 neuf zéro!" Born in Los Angeles, Eddie started off his career as a singer, but it was only in France that he had any results, so it's no wonder he later became a French citizen! Sacrebleu!! Coming soon, "Alphaville!"

Here Eddie faces off with character actor Vicente Roca as Chinese agent Wee Lee. Vicente has a fine list of credits including a role as a mayorial candidate in a film call "Vivi O, Preferibilmente, Morti" or maybe even lesser known as "Sundance Cassidy and Butch The Kid!" Ow!! That smarts!!

Sophie Hardy as Cynthia Lewis is a big distraction to Eddie!!

As is Ricardo Palacios. You might remember Ricardo from his killer role as Sancho Lopez in a later Jess Franco film, "The Blood Of Fu Manchu!"

When you first hear the title "Attack Of The Robots" you naturally assume it's either going to be a Mexican or a Japanese film, but the literal translation would have been something completely different, "Cards On The Table!" So now you know why they are not really robots!

So let's get down to the real nitty gritty! The bad guys and gals make robot(zombie)assassins out of normal every day people, but the only dupes susceptible cannot be + or - blood type, they must be neutral! Then, they put the glasses on them for complete control!

The retired Eddie Constantine as Al Pereira is called in on the case because his blood is neutral!

Two things, Al Pereira wears his hat in about 90% of this movie, and there is also an actor in the film named Al Pereira in the role of a fake Chinese man! Really!! I'm not kidding!

Al shows off for scintillating Françoise Brion as the evil scientific mastermind Lady Cecilia Addington Courtney to no avail!

I don't get it either, I just like this shot for some reason!

The musical genius behind the scene is the Masestro Paul Misraki, a man so beloved in France, he was made Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur and an Officier des Arts et des Lettres! Paul had been composing since the 30's and wrote the music for not only the 1956 Brigette Bardot film "Et Dieu... Créa La Femme:" or "And God Created Woman" but also "A Dog, a Mouse, and a Sputnik" among some other 130 titles! Sitting in at the piano is of course, who else but Jesus Franco!?!

Mr. One is about to get his ass kicked by Al! Speaking of Al, after undergoing the treatment, the Robots have blackface makeup, and then when they die, they turn white!! Tricky!!

After kicking Mr. One's butt, and getting out of the water with his suit and hat still on, Al puts on Mr. One's Funky glasses. Since Al's blood is also neutral, he falls under the spell and heads back to headquarters, otherwise he wouldn't have known how to get there!!

There's a really big hubbub, Bub, and The Boss gets stuck in the robot making machine for a dose of his own medicine!

By some kind of freakin' miracle, Al and Cynthia escape from the evil scientists, Wee Lee, and Al's old nemesis, Hermes! Some people think this film is a comedy, I just think it's a Jess Franco film!! A distinct category all by itself!!

EL SECRETO DEL DR. ORLOFF - Fernando García Morcillo & Daniel White - "Dr. Orloff's Monster" (1964)

A little over a year ago, a reader of this blog, a fine gentleman and a scholar, known as Matango, turned me on to the fantastic music in "Dr. Orloff's Monster", and I thought he was going to do a guest spot, but we've seemed to have lost contact, so Howard, wherever you are, this one's for you Buddy!

And I quote Matango, "In Jess Franco's "El secreto de Dr. Orloff"(better known in English as "Dr. Orloff's Monster" or "The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll"), the songs are credited to Fernando Garcia Morcilla. Daniel White wrote the main score and incidental music, and Franco himself plays jazz piano in a couple of cameos."

The dancer is these opening scenes looks like she has her drawers on backwards or maybe both legs in one hole!

I think Jesus left the room for a minute or two, and someone told her to just stare right at the camera for awhile!!!

Introducing Hugo Blanco as 'The Monster,' not Morpho, but Andros this time!! This curdled Vaseline look is odd at best!! Still, just as you would expect, Andros is a vicious killer zombie creature kinda guy with a penchant for singers and dancers, of course!!

I'm not quite sure what the name of this first victim is, we'll just call her Miss Plumber. Doesn't make much difference, her part in this movie is over already!!

Okay, freakin' Dr Orloff or Dr Jekyll as some people know him, is a weirdo, but he has this ultra cool castlefied pad. At this point, his niece Melissa has just arrived to spend some quality time with what's left of the family!!

This is Marcelo Arroita-Jáuregui as the devious Dr. Conrad Jekyll! (The whole Orloff/Jekyll thing is very confusing, I mean this guy is not Dr. Jekyll, he never changes into anything, but he's just always an ass or an oaf of grandiose proportions!)

Pastor Serrador as Inspector Sneezy Klein, the guy in charge of investigating all the murders, blows his way through the whole film!!

In this scene, Melissa's despondent boyfriend lines up martinis, trying to figure out what in the heck is going down at the Jekyll Madhouse!!

Matango writes "Dr. Orloff's Monster was Franco's followup to "Gritos En La Noche/The Awful Dr. Orloff." The two songs presented here mark the beginning of his fascination with over-long nightclub scenes that don't advance the plot." (But we sure love the music!!!)

I thought the lyrics translated a little better than that!!!

"Pepita Que Horror"--------"The harsh buzzing noise in "Pepita que horror" is the sound of the electronic transmitter in the diamond necklace that Orloff's monster Andros uses to find the girl he's supposed to abduct."

"Haciendo Realidad"------"Haciendo Realidad" is captured from the French dub, because the dialog is less distracting that way!"

Jess at the piano again, this time as an intellectual musician with a taxidermist girlfriend, who is about to become the next victim!!

Matango says "The movie is well worth watching -- a very stylish Eurogothic horror, with a bigger budget and less sleaze than Jesus Franco's later films. The only thing missing is a star like Howard Vernon or Klaus Kinski."

Agnès Spaak as Jekyll's neice Melissa is Hot!! She's stong, innocent, and differently beautiful all at the same time, and she just turned 65 a couple of months ago!! And now, even I have to go searching, because in 1966(a fantastic year) Agnès was in some dang Spy movie entitled "Baraka Sur X 13!" and I just gotta see it!!!

DER TEUFEL KAM AUS AKASAVA - Odón Alonso/Sigi Schwab - "The Devil Came From Akasava" (1971)

Welcome back to another Friday night fantasy from the fertile mind of Jesus Franco! Tonight's feature from 1971 is entitled "The Devil Came From Akasava," and has a knockout of a title card!! The exceptionally killer music is brought to you courtesy of two wild cats, Odón Alonso and Sigi Schwab! This is a very interesting pairing for a couple of reasons! Number one being that this was the first film that Odón ever composed for, and it was the last that Sigi ever worked on. One of my favorite bits of trivia is that Sigi Schwab also worked using the name Et Cetera!! Musically, what you got here is a sitar, extra fuzzy guitar, psych organ, harpsichord and a funky horn section all thrown together to a dance beat with jungle sound effects like a stoned Martin Denny in a not so quiet village! Shows you what kind of creative genius there once was in the world!

Okay, Let's All Go to Akasava!! Where the Hell is it, nobody knows, but it sounds very cool when you say it! There's kind of a mine/cave there where this guy, for some reason, knows where this mysterious rock dwells that can turn shit into gold, and peoples into zombies!!

Any normal person would probably understand that an ore with such miraculous properties would also be freakin' off the charts radioactive!! Well, if it's not a no-brainer before you find the stuff, it definitely is afterwards!

Meanwhile back in town, the joint is jumpin' to the innerstellar beat of the spacey "Jupimatic" juke box and it's top tunes of the week!!

Hey, what kind of a place is this???

For me this film is essentially about two people, Soledad Miranda as the sensuous Jane Morgan and Siegfried Schürenberg as the frumpy Sir Phillip!

We've touched on the tragic story of Soledad Miranda here before. She was just really getting her career going with the aid of one Jess Franco, when she was denied further existence at the age of 27 because of a tragic car accident. Ironically, her husband, José Manuel Simões was a race car driver!

On the other hand Siegfried Schürenberg as Sir Phillip, was 71 years of age when this film was made! Siegfried Schürenberg had a great career reprising a role very similar to Sir Phillip, usually called Sir John, in a bunch of Edgar Wallace films! Sir Phillip/John is always very entertaining, as the fumbling, flustered character who is supposed to be in charge, but who always manages to get the job done somehow!

Jane Morgan is a secret agent working undercover as a stripper in the "Red Rose Night-Club" and she is quite talented!

Oh, Hell, I've already left out half the characters, but I will tell you one thing, this is one uncompromising postion for a dead assassin!!

Just like in "Yokai Monsters," the sub-titles pretty much explain exactly what is going on!!

Meanwhile, Jane Morgan is back on stage and lookin' good! Like many others, Soledad Miranda had more than one stage name, and was actually billed as Susann Korda in this film!

More obligatory questions!!

A.C.T.I.O.N!!!

SOLEDAD!!!

That's right, YOU figger it out! It's your options, it's your choice!!

Really, this is such a great shot!! Thanx Jess!

The power is in The Box!!

Jesus Franco has a long history of weird zombies, and this film is no exception. The Euro-Zombies always have a trashy sophistication about them that is lacking in the American and Voodoo zombies!

Classic portrait of Dungeon hero and stalwart Howard Vernon, this time out as the valet Humphrey! If Howard Vernon is in it, we're watching it!

An extra added, but poignant statement leads to even more trouble!

It's not the end of the world, just The End to yet another great Jesus Franco moving picture!
