THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER / Sack Amusement Enterprises - 1939

It's Friday with Tabonga, here at The Dungeon!.. I started this month with THE DEVIL'S SLEEP, so, I decided that one good devil deserves another. THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER was filmed in beautiful Kingston, Jamaica with an all-star colored cast and is a remake of QUANGA from 1936. That original poster must go for a whopping sum, it's pure awesome!

Eegah!! sent over a musical soundclip for our enjoyment, sooooo, you can push the big red 'GO' button next to the little blue atomic dealie, NOW, Rufus The Gnat! Here's our audio offering for... THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER!

We get to see a lot of local color, including a cock fight, and lots of amazing jungle locations in and around Kingston!

The story's about young Isabelle Walton from Harlem, who inherits a Jamaican banana plantation and returns to manage it. Since her arrival though, there's been no sign of her disinherited half-sister Sylvia, who ran the plantation until their father's death.

Now in hiding, Sylvia schemes to regain her former place by manipulating local 'obeah' superstition. The pig has a human soul in it!

Hamtree Harrington plays Percy Jackson, he's concerned about the growing sound of drums in the distance...

There's even an afternoon at the track watching the horse races.

Sylvia has voodoo and revenge on her mind for Isabelle!

Isabelle is saved in the end by Jungle Jim and everything gets settled...

We'll end it with this great lobby card!..

CASH ON DEMAND - "Pay Up Or Else!" (1962)

Tonight's feature might sound like it's a Pay Per View country western concert, but it's not! Welcome to this Wednesday's Crime Thriller Classic, Hammer's 1966 feature, "Cash On Demand!"

"Cash On Demand" is not a movie that needs a whole lot of photos to justify it's existence! In fact, it's charm lies in the wonder of it's simplicity! It's not astounding what you can do when you have a couple of thousand bucks, a good little story, and some fine quality actors! It's money well spent!

The music as far as I'm concerned is nothing special, it just sets the mood for this tale of a clever bank robbery! It's not surprising that the writer, Wilfred Josephs, was a dentist before becoming a full-time composer! Wilfred also worked on "The Deadly Bees" and "Die! Die! My Darling!"

Almost a stage play, about 90% of "Cash On Demand"  is shot in the office of Peter Cushing as the bank manager Harry Fordyce! Always a class act, if you're a big fan of Peter Cushing and Hammer films in general, then I would imagine that like me, you will find it refreshing to just watch Peter act in something other than a horror film!

Peter's nemesis in the film is slick bank robber André Morell as Colonel Gore Hepburn! Like Peter Cushing, André Morell also had an awesome career in British horror films that included everything from his role as Professor Bernard Quatermass in the TV series "Quatermass And The Pit" to films like "The Giant Behemoth," "She," "The Plague Of The Zombies," and "The Mummy's Shroud!" He also had the role of Marshal Gaspard de Saux-Tavannes on the "Dr. Who" TV series, and I would be completely remiss in my duties if I didn't tell you one of his earliest films was titled "13 Men And A Gun!"

"Cash On Demand" is a keen battle of wits between a couple of fine actors! It's only 66 minutes long, so it won't take up a lot of your time, and it's available as a double feature DVD with "Stop Me Before I Kill!" The story takes place during the holidays, so why not watch it instead of "A Christmas Story" this year! I'm sure the change will do you good!

DR. RENAULT'S SECRET / Twentieth Century Fox - 1942

It's another Monster Monkey Monday with Tabonga, here at The Dungeon!.. This well done 58 minute film stars two horror masters, J. Carrol (THE MONSTER MAKER) Naish and George (THE FLYING SERPENT) Zucco. The storyline is about a young doctor who pays a visit to his fiancée in a remote French villa owned by her scientist uncle. He's met by Noel, Dr. Renault's mysterious assistant, who seems like an odd character indeed. He eventually learns Noel's true identity.. He's actually an ape turned into a man by Renault's bizarre experiments!

Eegah!! sent over this musical soundclip for our listening pleasure, sooooo, you can push the big red 'GO' button there opposite the purple launch pad exhaust valve, NOW, Ralphie The Tarantula!.. Here's our audio offering for... DR. RENAULT'S SECRET!

Noel, on the left, don't take kindly to being made fun of when he comes to town...

Especially by a drunk Walt Disney! Later, Walt pays for his rude comments!

Also in the mix are big Mike Mazurki as grounds keeper/suspect, Rogell, and Arthur (DAUGHTER OF DR. JEKYLL) Shields as Inspector Duval.

Shepperd Strudwick, as John Shepperd, plays the visiting Dr. Larry Forbes. Noel drives him to Dr. Renault's villa, where there's a secret!

These are always fun!

Noel has to stay in his cell when he misbehaves, and, has a lot of pent up anger against Dr. Renault for some reason!

At the carnival, Noel shows his strength and gongs the bell using just one hand, setting off some fireworks?!..

You can hear obnoxious asses Mike 'n' Ike in the soundclip as they clip on Noel, sooo...

Ike gets thrown out his second story window and Mike gets pummeled from barber chair to mirrored post in his own shop!

Larry goes exploring in the cellar and discovers some interesting clues to the mystery.

He finds photos of Noel as he was being changed into a man! Ray (IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE) Corrigan plays the Ape.

Noel gets his hands around Dr. Renault's neck for screwing up his life, and so, he ends his!

It turns out that Rogell kidnaps lovely Madelon and takes her into the woods to his hideout.

Noel follows and is shot by Rogell. Noel shakes it off and finally tosses Rogell into the mill's paddle, breaking his spine! As Noel makes his way back down to help Madelon, he succumbs to the gunshot wounds...

TASTE OF FEAR - Clifton Parker - "Ice Cream Of Fear!" (1961)

This week's Saturday Night Special is part two of an impromptu quasi-tribute to Ronald Lewis originally called "Taste Of Fear," but like a good majority of films of this ilk, it's name was changed to "Scream Of Fear" because somebody somewhere thought it had a better taste to it! So..... without further delay, let's get this puppy rolling!

First off, there is something about this title card and the opening scene from this movie that is very misleading, but you're going to have to figure that out on your own!

This scene is actually out of order as far as the movie is concerned. In the movie, this is what you see before the title card and the credits roll. Some guys are trolling the lake, searching, and finding the body you saw in the title card! This is a pretty awesome shot with those snow covered mountains in the background that lets you know right off that this is not a normal movie! The spooky music is provided by Clifton (CURSE OF THE DEMON) Parker!

The man of the hour is once again Ronald Lewis, not as a race car driver this time, but as Robert, the chauffeur for a very wealthy family! Bob, as he sometimes called, has just picked up the estranged and crippled daughter and heiress Penny Appleby at the airport, and is taking her to her Father's estate in France! Penny has been out of country for many years! The petite but oh so lovely Susan Strasberg has the role of Penny! Susan's career wasn't filled with much horror, but she was in two Night Gallery TV episodes, and starred in two classic cult stoner drug movies, "The Trip," and "Psych-Out!"

Penny Appleby is greeted by Jane Appleby, a cordial stepmother she has never met played by Ann (Breaking The Sound Barrier) Todd, and told that her Father is out of town for a few days on a business trip! They have gone to great lengths to make Penny's stay a pleasant one, by adding makeshift ramps to aid in her mobility!

It doesn't take long before Penny rolls into a room that appears to house none other than a dead version of her Father!

Penny reacts predictably to the situation!

The dead Father is played by Fred Johnson who was in "The Quatermass Xperiment," "The Curse Of Frankenstein," "The Brides Of Dracula," "Doctor Blood's Coffin," and was also the guy in the Yeti suit in "The Abominable Snowman!"

In reality, the room is nothing more than a storage area for a bunch of oddball garage sale items! Is Penny really totally out of her mind?

In a frantic retreat, Penny rolls her wheelchair into what appears to be the strangest swimming pool I've ever seen, and is fished out of the water by the ever so heroic chauffeur Bob!

At dinner that night, her Father's good friend, a shrink named Dr. Pierre Gerrard, tells Penny that maybe her mind is why she is crippled, and not her body! Penny then explains that her mind has no control over the broken back she received when she was tossed off a horse many years previous! The Doctor is played by none other than Christopher Lee, who it is said is on record as saying that in his opinion, "Scream Of Fear"  is THE best film Hammer ever made!

The next night her Father's body appears in Penny's bedroom! They find a wet spot in the chair where Penny saw the body, so her and Bob deduct that the body must be stored in this freezer, but after prying off the lock, they find themselves in the wrong!

"Why Bob, Why?" Susan Strasberg is so beautiful, sweet and innocent, it's a real shame she succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 60 in 1999!

Whoa! Looks like they need a better pool cleaning service, that's for sure! Unfortunately Ronald Lewis's career fizzled out in the 70's,  and after that he became quite despondent and decided to end it all by taking a bunch of barbiturates in 1982!

Having nowhere else to look, Bob takes the plunge, and indeed finds the body of Penny's Father at the bottom of the pool!

The two of them decide to go to the police and report what they found! Seemingly, the Stepmother, probably in cahoots with the Psychiatrist, wanted Penny to go mad, so she would be the one to inherit all the money instead!

I had no idea that General Motors ever made anything but automobiles, but I guess in Europe in the 1960's, they were apparently in the crane business!!

"Scream Of Fear" is a great little thriller, so for all of you who have never seen it, even though it's been out for more than 50 years, there is no way I am going to give away the ending! You can find it on Netflix as a double Feature with "The Gorgon," and it's also available on Amazon! If Christopher Lee and I both think it's that good, I don't think it's worth arguing about! Just do it!
